Ski Television:

Knee Angulation

One of the first moves we learn to make we really add power to our skiing, is where we flex the knee and turn it inward to form a knee angulation. If you want to progress that's also one of the first moves you need to do it out some time. The reason I say that is because, a lot of people who just use knee angulation as there effort to edge miss out on an opportunity to move laterally, and this opportunity comes in the top half of the turn when you can move in words quite aggressively by stretching your legs outwards.

Now listen here this, I know about this because this is mistake I make a lot of the time. and on skies I love to hook my knees in. Watch though, when I do that notice that lower leg goes in which is good  that puts the ski on a bit of edge. But look (picture left) the upper leg now goes out, and the hips stay out there but really what I want to do, its more like riding a motorcycle, you know the way you see that on TV and those guys they get there inside knee way over. So look at this if you lean your knee out a bit like that you can get your hips way over to the inside  and then when your there you can still go up and down like this (below right) which you need to do to balance.

Here's the way to get the feeling for this: turn the feet leave the knees out, move the body in, and try moving all the time while your doing this too. Because you need to be able to balance yourself weather your increasing the edge or decreasing the edge and you balance yourself by moving in those joints there and if you have that habit of  just doing that and locking it up, two problems, you wont generate too much edge angle, and you'll get very stiff in the legs and very static in the legs, and that doesn't work either. so think about riding a motorcycle, think about that great line in "terminator 2" where Arnold says " I want your boots, and your motorcycle." Maybe that will work for you.
