Las Lenas, Argentina

I had heard that Las Lenas was a good ski area but until you're on the mountain exploring the huge expanse of terrain, you have no idea just how good it really is.

The trip to the top was delayed for avalanche control after close to 2 feet of snow fell over 24 hours.  But when the top did open, the terrain we found off the Martre Chairlift confirmed this is among the world's best great ski resorts.

Built in 1983, Las Lenas attracts many visitors from Buenos Aires and Brazil. North America is an expanding market and although the area lacks high speed lifts, the fact that the resort is limited to approximately 3,500 guests at any one time means you'll never have lift lines. And with the challenging terrain you'll appreciate the time to relax on the way up the mountain.

On the mountain the snobar has a European flavour and like Europeans, the South Americans enjoy their time just relaxing in the mountain environment.There are virtually no day skiers and all the facilities you need are right here on the mountain. The unique architecture dates the development which has not grown much over the years.  But expansion is planned for the future. There are hotel options to fit most budgets and apartments with full kitchen facilities for families and other who choose to cook for themselves.

There are children's programs and an active ski school with lessons for all abilities.  It's a long trip to get here from North America, but everyone we spoke to felt it was worth it.

Experts' Paradise
The mile long Marte Chairlift rises over 2,500 ft to some of the best in bounds extreme terrain at any resort in the world.  All around there are steep chutes and couloirs that are expert's heaven on a powder day.  Off the top of Marte, a groomed run called Jupiter provides an intermediate alternate back to the bottom.  And for anyone who wants to test the powder, that option exists on either side of the groomed terrain.

On the other side of the mountain, the Caris Quad Chair unloads at an elevation of 8,600 ft. And 1,200 ft below is Las Lenas village and from her you can dive into Cenidor, an expert slope with exposures to ensure consistent dry snow. Here you also get a tantalizing view of Juno Bowl where a 30 minute hike will be rewarded handsomely.

The Minerva Chairlift at the centre of the area gives you many groomed options and the Elurra Restaurant a refreshment stop with a great view.
