You know, I’m a proponent of using lots of movement the first few runs to warm up, but then, once I am warmed up, something else I like to do is have a couple of technical runs, where I work on refinement of the basic skills.
Like the skill of turning. The new skis being shorter and shapelier are so much easier to seduce into a turn, you might say why bother, you can just turn any old way? Well, the point is we want to turn with efficiency and turn in a way that allows us to retain our balance, so what we want to do is end up with no twist in the back.
So we'll turn just the lower leg for now, just the lower leg below the knee. The common error that people make is turning with the waist as well as the skis and this works, all right, you can turn like that, but not only is it less attractive, it's less efficient.
So instead of that, now I’m just gonna turn my lower legs. Just the lower legs and the back has less twist in it. And you know where this turning skill becomes really useful is on the steeper pitches, where you have to face your body down the hill and turn the feet and legs back and forth.
Again, I’m just trying to turn my lower legs to create the direction change. Remember, if you can refine these skills, more of the mountain will become accessible to you.
