SHOW OVERVIEW
Pontiac World of Skiing began as Ski Base TV show in 1978. Since its beginning nearly 30 years ago, the show has appealed to skiers across Canada for its informative and entertaining coverage of skiing and the lifestyle surrounding the sport. Originally produced by CKVR Television in Barrie, Ontario, Ski Base grew into a nationally syndicated program with over 30 stations across Canada.
In 1992 Double Black Diamond Productions acquired the show and renamed it World of Skiing. For 15 years it has continued to evolve and today boasts a national audience of over 100,000 weekly television viewers.
In 2006, Pontiac World of Skiing expanded its distribution with the redevelopment of SkiTelevision.com. All current show features and a variety of historical material (such as ski tips) are now available, on demand, on our web site Video Player.
Pontiac/General Motors has been a key partner in the program since 1994. Pontiac World of Skiing (PWOS) is a magazine style show covering a wide range of skiing interests. Each week the show features a varying mix of:
- DESTINATION RESORTS: In recent years coverage has included resorts in Canada, the United States, Europe, Japan, South America, New Zealand and Australia. We provide comprehensive resort coverage examining the skiing experience, resort history, amenities, activities and other elements to give our viewers a complete overview of the destination. The TV coverage reinforced by our web content including Video Brochures from selected resorts as well as written information, skiing statistics and links to each resort's own web site.
- SKI INSTRUCTION: In 2007/08 two new ski tips presenters were introduced on the show. After 25 consecutive years with the show as our ski tips presenter, Rob Butler retired. Rob’s replacements were selected by our audience across Canada in a season long “Canadian Idol” style promotion during the winter of 2006/07. Steve Young and Josh Foster, both Level 4 CSIA ski instructors with unique styles have stepped into Rob's shoes and each week provide a new instructional tip for improving your skiing and learning to make the most of the mountain environment.
- PERSONALITY PROFILES: PWOS gains access to the world’s best skiers who are regularly profiled as Peak Performers
- COMPETITION: PWOS follows the competitive ski scene providing feature coverage of key athletes and events in the sport. The Freestyle File covers the ever evolving world of freestyle and free-skiing, while The Race Report looks at alpine racing and the Canadian Alpine Ski Team.
- INDUSTRY NEWS: In addition to a regular feature line-up, PWOS stays in touch with what’s happening in skiing, following key events, activities and trends that make skiing a colorful lifestyle pursuit enjoyed by millions of all ages.
Pontiac World of Skiing continues to be the most popular ski TV program in Canada. The show boasts the following:
- 29 year history
- Loyal audience of skiing enthusiasts across Canada

PWOS maintains a high profile with comprehensive show marketing and promotional support providing show sponsors, suppliers and advertisers with excellent value and return on their investment. As well, Double Black Diamond Productions offers sponsorship and advertising opportunities that provides access to a wide range of ski TV programming and content. PWOS is packaged with World Cup skiing TV broadcasts, national magazine pages and digital media content for one stop shopping for advertisers seeking a targeted skiing audience. No other ski media property offers greater reach to such a broad base of skiing enthusiasts across Canada. PWOS provides a multi-platform offering that is extremely effective in communicating sponsor messaging in the cluttered world of advertising options. Our value proposition is package pricing across multiple mediums that makes PWOS an easy and affordable way to reach a dedicated and desirable audience of skiers and loyal viewers.
In addition, PWOS is distributed internationally under the title Skier’s World and is sold around the world. Skier’s World currently airs on cable and digital channels in the USA, Caribbean, Great Britain (Travel Channel UK in Europe), Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Greece, Israel and Finland.
PWOS resort partners benefit from international exposure when episodes are sold in foreign markets. However, this benefit is not guaranteed as each distribution deal allows the buyer to select specific episodes for broadcast in their region. As well, Skier's World does not include any of the sponsorship elements found in Pontiac World of Skiing. This is why the show is generically named 'Skier's World' for all distribution outside of Canada. Shows are often customized for international markets. So, although the content is the same, and the general look of the show mirrors the Canadian version, Skier's World stands alone in each respective country as a unique program tailored to suit the local audience, often translated into the local language or modified with substitles for non-English speakers.
